OVERVIEW + KEY FEATURES

The goal of this project was to reconstruct the walkways around the farm meadow to make them accessible for people using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers. The original paths were uneven and posed tripping hazards. In addition to the updated trails, we built an overlook terrace designed to keep picnic tables in place and out of the way when the lawn is being mowed.

CHALLENGES

One of the biggest challenges was keeping the site open to visitors and hikers throughout construction. This limited what equipment we could use and when. We also had to maintain a natural appearance for the trail while keeping the grade at or below five percent and minimizing disruption to the surrounding areas. On top of that, an unusually rainy spring made the ground soft and muddy, complicating equipment access and movement.

SOLUTION

To reduce our impact, we coordinated with Sudbury Valley Trust to identify alternative staging areas and brought in our smallest equipment. We also partnered with Lemon Brooke to help refine the final layout after re-profiling trail grades.

END RESULT

The community now has a new “All Persons Trail” that’s easier to access and enjoy for everyone. The trail features a scenic overlook with a fieldstone patio, a picnic and play area, and several spur trails with fieldstone walkways and stone stairs offering multiple access points.
