Chiller Upgrade

Overview + Key Features
The goal of this project was to install a new chiller unit. It involved modifying and adding structural steel on the roof to carry the new chiller unit as well as new piping. This piping went from the chiller to the new pumps, and was mostly under the mechanical mezzanine.
Challenges
A few different challenges were encountered throughout this project. One of the early challenges we faced involved completing the structural work before installing the new chiller on the roof. Another challenge involved coordinating piping route and riser locations with existing mechanical equipment. Because this project was being completed during the middle of winter in Boston, the cold presented challenges when welding pipes on the rooftop as well.
Solution
To try to avoid the challenges posed by worked in the middle of winter, early procurement of the unit and structural steel was key to getting the new unit to the roof. Extensive early planning allowed the piping portion to be successful with riser locations and keeping the piping elevation in the mechanical mezzanine as high as possible. We also utilized a three person welding crew as was able to rotate welders between outside and inside work.

End Result
The end result of this project was very successful. The shutdown/tie in time was kept to a weekend and a consistent schedule was maintained through extensive preconstruction planning.
